Environmental investigation of bio-modification of steel slag through microbially induced carbonate precipitation

چکیده

Steel slag (SS) is one of byproduct steel manufacture industry. The environmental concerns SS may limit their re-use in different applications. goal this study was to investigate the leaching behavior metals from before and after treated by microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). Toxicity characteristic procedure, synthetic procedure water tests were performed evaluate major elements (Fe, Mg Ca) trace (Ba, Cu Mn) three scenarios. concentrations increased with content SS. After it reached peak concentration, concentration decreased leachability all concerned below 0.5%. generated MICP process contributed low metals. bio-modified process, Ba TCLP, SPLP WLT 2.0 mg/L, which drinking regulated U.S. EPA. leached out MICP-treated SS-sand samples 1.3 mg/L national secondary water. Compared regulations U.S.EPA Mississippi Department Environment Quality (MDEQ), classified as non-hazardous materials respects Meanwhile, maximum contaminant limits states that are eco-friendly can be reused construction materials.

Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation Employing Environmental Isolates

In this study, five microbes were employed to precipitate calcite in cohesionless soils. Four microbes were selected from calcite-precipitating microbes isolated from calcareous sand and limestone cave soils, with Sporosarcina pasteurii ATCC 11859 (standard strain) used as a control. Urease activities of the four microbes were higher than that of S. pasteurii. The microbes and urea-CaCl₂ medium...

Sequestration of Radionuclides and Metal Contaminants through Microbially-Induced Carbonate Precipitation

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), an emerging technology for soil improvement, also may be used to sequester (biomineralize) radionuclides and metal contaminants (e.g., 90 Sr 2+ , Cd 2+ ) in groundwater, a significant problem at some U.S. Department of Energy sites. Previous work using the bacterium Bacillus pasteurii suggests that in-situ sequestration of these contaminants c...

Biotic and abiotic effects on CO2 sequestration during microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

In this study, CO2 sequestration was investigated through the microbially-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) process with isolates obtained from a cave called 'Cave Without A Name' (Boerne, TX, USA) and the Pamukkale travertines (Denizli, Turkey). The majority of the bacterial isolates obtained from these habitats belonged to the genera Sporosarcina, Brevundimonas, Sphingobacterium ...

Microbially induced corrosion of carbon steel in deep groundwater environment

The metallic low and intermediate level radioactive waste generally consists of carbon steel and stainless steels. The corrosion rate of carbon steel in deep groundwater is typically low, unless the water is very acidic or microbial activity in the environment is high. Therefore, the assessment of microbially induced corrosion of carbon steel in deep bedrock environment has become important for...
